Tableau Software, LLC, was acquired by Salesforce in 2019, the software ‘Tableau’ (a data visualization application), software in use since 2003, became part of the Salesforce bucket of products.
As the market-leading choice for modern business intelligence, the Tableau analytics platform, has been adding flavor to the users by making analytics more dynamic through the features offered by the software. The ability to explore and manage data, through the ‘Tableau’ application, has been of use to individuals and organization, since its inception. The feature of ‘Tableau Public’ has also enabled those freelance and non-enterprise users to extract benefits, which is available as a free utility. The ability of Tableau, to discover the data at appreciable speed and also to draw meaningful outputs have assisted individuals and businesses across the globe.
In a recent announcement, Salesforce has reportedly launched the “Tableau Pulse” as part of its innovative product upgrade. The advent and proliferation of Generative AI, needs no mention of the revolutionization that the IT world is undergoing. The incorporation of Generative AI into the Tableau framework has added another layer, making it easier for all users to discover relevant metrics, create metrics from existing content, understand insights, ask questions, conduct root cause analysis, and tie data to a real-world context.
Tableau Pulse is a reimagined data experience that makes data more accessible to everyone regardless of their expertise with data visualization tools. Tableau Pulse is available for Tableau Cloud users, and has been designed in such a manner that the users can leverage the power of Tableau AI to deliver data in ways that are more personalized, contextual, and smart. An Insights platform runs on top of the Metrics Layer, which is a statistical service that automatically generates insights about the Metrics. The service also enables users to engage with insights and dive deeper into their data through guided follow-up questions that are proactively surfaced and based on the data’s context. The AI utility also enables additional features that can enable ranking those insights, and then seek summarization in natural language.
Furthermore, Tableau Pulse also facilitates a Next-Gen Experiences through its presentation of the data using the intuitive capability. The capability to quickly pan across the business with the supply of varied data that is discoverable (including social media contents through plug-ins) is also an innovative utility that the Tableau Pulse brings in through this upgrade. Generative AI-powered insight summations also helps users to focus on the data headlines, thereby ensuring that important patterns, trends, outliers, and changes in the data are noticed.
Tableau Pulse also allows a user to create a custom metrics homepage based on KPIs relevant to that user. It will act as an automatic data news feed, eliminating the need for manual filtering. Tableau Pulse is available to all Tableau Cloud users.
Pulse is said to be architected around three layers:
- A metrics layer that allows metrics and KPIs to be set once and used consistently across the organization.
- An insights platform that automatically generates insights surfaced according to the metrics and KPIs previously defined.
- Next-Gen Experiences, delivering insights to users in their preferred workflows: Slack, email, etc.
It is pertinent to mention that, Generative AI has adopted at the heart of this new offering. Users can query the insights platform using natural language; genAI will naturally create the summary of data for Next-Gen experiences, as part of Tableau Public.
Why we care. AI is a technology of staggering complexity, but what we continue to see is ways AI simplifies things for its users — from metadata tagging to coding to sentiment analysis. Data visualization was supposed to be a big step on the way to making data accessible to business users who were not data scientists. Now we see a layer of AI allowing those users to talk back to the data, ask it questions and have accessible data digests delivered in their workflows.
Future features. Tableau plans to continue to add features to Pulse during the rest of 2024. These will include:
- Access to Pulse via the Tableau mobile app.
- Goals and thresholds for metrics.
- Additional metrics types.
- And even more.

It is thus concluded that, the advent of mainstream generative AI, the user is now able to respond to complex questions with equally complex answers that sound as if a human wrote them. Tableau Pulse leverages generative AI technology to help everyone increase their data culture and make data-driven decisions through the utility offered. Tableau also vouches for the ethics that surround the usage of such agile tools. The adherence of these ethics is now left to the user.
